How do you increase CCU on a Roblox game?
Why concurrent players rise and fall, what to check before spending anything on reach, and how clips move visits and CCU together.
Updated
The short version
- CCU is arrivals multiplied by how long each player stays, so it moves when either of those moves.
- Check session length and day-one return before buying reach, because reach into a game that does not hold players decays within hours.
- Roblox reads player behaviour to decide placement, so retention compounds into discovery and poor retention compounds the other way.
- Arrivals that land close together raise CCU more than the same number of arrivals spread across a month.
- Clips posted by many creators at once are how a small game gets arrivals without an existing audience.
What actually determines CCU?
Two numbers. How many players arrive in a given period, and how long each one stays. Concurrent players is the product of those, so a change in either moves the figure.
That is worth being precise about because the two have different fixes. More arrivals is a reach problem. Longer sessions is a game problem. Work on the wrong one and the number does not move.
- Arrivals per hour, how many people open the game
- Session length, how long the average player stays in it
- Return rate, how many come back the next day
- Timing, whether arrivals cluster or spread out
What should you check before buying any reach?
Session length and day-one return. These two decide whether arrivals turn into concurrent players or pass straight through.
If players leave in the first minute, every new arrival leaves in the first minute too. Reach multiplies whatever the game already does, so it is worth getting the first few minutes right before paying to send anyone to them.
When those numbers are healthy, reach is the fastest lever available, and it is the one most small games have never pulled.
What counts as a healthy first minute?
A player understanding what the game is and having something to do. Most drop-off in the first minute is a player who did not work out the point fast enough, which is a tutorial and onboarding question rather than a content question.
Why does Roblox placement follow retention?
Because Roblox recommends games on what players do with them. Starts, session length and returns are the signals, so a game that holds people gets shown to more people.
This is why a spike into a game with good retention compounds: the arrivals improve the signals, the signals improve placement, and placement brings arrivals that cost nothing. The same spike into a game with weak retention produces the opposite reading.
Why does the timing of arrivals matter so much?
Because CCU counts people in the game at the same moment. Ten thousand visits across a month is a quiet game. The same ten thousand across three days is a game with a visible player count, and a visible player count is itself a reason people join.
Concentration also helps retention. A multiplayer game with enough people in it at once is a better game than the same build with nobody in it, so arrivals that cluster improve the thing the player arrives to.
How do clips bring arrivals without an existing audience?
By reaching people through recommendation rather than through follower counts. Short-form platforms show a clip to people who watch that kind of thing, so a creator with a small account can post a clip that reaches hundreds of thousands.
Volume is what makes it work. One clip is a lottery ticket. A few hundred clips from a few hundred accounts, posted across the same week, produces arrivals that land close enough together to move concurrent players rather than just the visit count.
Every clip carries the game name, so somebody watching can search it and be playing a few seconds later. That is a shorter path than any ad format on the platform offers.
Questions we get asked
- How do you increase CCU on a Roblox game?
- Raise arrivals and session length together. Check that players stay past the first minute and return the next day, then concentrate new arrivals into a short window so more of them are in the game at the same time.
- Why did my Roblox CCU suddenly drop?
- Usually because arrivals fell rather than because retention changed. Placement in discovery shifts as other games gain signals, and a game that was being recommended can stop being recommended without anything changing in the build itself.
- Do more visits always mean higher CCU?
- No. Concurrent players counts people in the game at the same moment, so visits spread thinly across a month can rise while CCU stays flat. Arrivals that land close together move the number far more.
- How many clips does it take to move CCU?
- Enough for the arrivals to overlap in time. A campaign sets a view target rather than a video count, because what matters is the volume of people reached inside the window rather than how many videos it took.
